Merry graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine, Cambridge University in 1999. She was awarded a Thouron scholarship upon graduation, which enabled her to complete a one year equine surgical internship at the New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, USA. In 2000 she began a 3½ year equine surgery residency programme at Leahurst, University of Liverpool, funded by the Horse Trust (formerly the Home of Rest for Horses) gaining the RCVS certificate in soft tissue surgery in 2002. In 2004 Merry joined the Endell Veterinary group as an equine surgeon for 18 months. During this time she gained the European (ECVS) Diploma in Equine Surgery in 2005.
In 2006 Merry undertook a three year PhD study on MRI of the equine distal limb, again funded by the Horse Trust, based at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket. On completion of her PhD in March 2009, Merry joined the referral hospital team at NEH, where she is responsible for running the MRI and scintigraphy services as well as participating in the emergency surgery rota. Merry specialises in advanced diagnostic imaging and surgery, with particular interests in MRI and emergency surgery such as colic and traumatology.
Merry has published numerous papers in peer reviewed scientific journals to date, on subjects including MRI in the horse, subchondral bone cysts and colic, receiving the Home of Rest for Horses Clinical Evidence Award in 2005. She has written book chapters on advanced diagnostic imaging and MRI in the horse. Merry has regularly presented at national and international surgery and imaging meetings across Europe and has written review articles in the veterinary and equine press.
