Ian Wright MA VetMB DEO DipECVS MRCVS

Ian graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1979 and spent 5 years in private practice before returning to the University as Lecturer in Equine Surgery. After 5 years in this position, Ian moved to the Animal Health Trust where he spent 6 years as Senior Equine Surgeon, and Head of the Equine Clinical Unit. He joined Greenwood Ellis & Partners in 1996 and is now a partner in the practice, where he runs the surgical referral service.

Ian obtained the Diploma in Equine Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1991 and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgery in 1993. To date he has made over 150 national/international scientific presentations and taught post-graduate courses in surgery, arthroscopy, internal fixation, stud medicine and diagnostic techniques. He has published over 50 papers on equine surgery and orthopaedics, written 5 book chapters and edited 2 text books including the 2005 third edition of Diagnostic and Surgical Arthroscopy in the Horse. He has been recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a specialist in equine surgery since 1992 and was awarded the Equine Veterinary Journal Richard Hartley Clinical Prize in 1994 and 1999.

 

Mark Hillyer BVSc PhD DipECVS DipECEIM MRCVS

Mark graduated from the University of Bristol in 1987. After graduation he worked at the Veterinary School at the University of Bristol as an equine and farm animal clinician. Here he developed his interests in equine internal medicine and soft tissue surgery. Following completion of a residency training, he became a Lecturer in 1995 and completed a PhD on equine colic in 2002. The same year he moved to Newmarket providing a hospital based referral service in equine internal medicine and soft tissue surgery. Mark has RCVS certificates in equine practice, equine soft tissue surgery and equine internal medicine and is also a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine.

Mark has published over 45 scientific papers, written 5 book chapters and is co-author and editor of Diagnostic Techniques in Equine Medicine, which is now in its second edition. In addition Mark has given presentations at over 30 national and international meetings. He is an Editorial Consultant of Equine Veterinary Journal as well as co-chairman of the Clinical Evidence Board. In 1997 he was awarded the Equine Veterinary Journal Richard Hartley Clinical Prize. Mark is a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Equine Board and has been both a regular examiner and advisor for the RCVS equine certificates.

 

Gaynor Minshall BVSc CertES(Orth) MRCVS

Gaynor graduated from the University of Bristol in 1998 and following a brief period in first opinion practice undertook an internship at Liphook Equine Hospital. On completion she returned to equine practice before joining the referrals department of Greenwood Ellis & Partners in 2002 where she is now an associate partner. Gaynor gained her certificate in Equine Surgery (Orthopaedics) in 2007 and has published in peer reviewed scientific journals and presented on the same. She has also written veterinary articles and presented by invitation. Her primary interests are lameness investigation and orthopaedic imaging.

 

Matthew RW Smith BVetMed CertES(Orth) DipECVS MRCVS
European and RCVS Specialist in Equine Surgery

Matt graduated with honours from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 2001. He undertook a 2-year surgical internship at Reynolds House Referrals, Greenwood Ellis and Partners in Newmarket, before entering a 3 year residency training programme in Equine Surgery at The Royal Veterinary College. Matt obtained the RCVS certificate in Equine Surgery (Orthopaedics) in 2004 and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) diploma in equine surgery in 2007. He is recognised by both the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a specialist in Equine Surgery.

After completing his surgical residency in 2006, Matt returned to work for the referrals department of Greenwood Ellis & Partners and is interested in all areas of equine surgery, but with particular interest in minimally invasive surgery, including arthroscopy and laparoscopy, fracture repair and colic surgery. He has published 10 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals on subjects including endoscopic surgery techniques, use of mesenchymal stem cells in equine tendonitis, bone cysts and colic. Matt has also presented on these and other topics, at many national and international meetings across Europe, and received awards in 2004 and 2006 from the European College of Veterinary Surgeons for presentations given. He has written review articles in the veterinary press by invitation. In addition to his clinical work, Matt has also maintained an active role in undergraduate teaching, regularly delivering lectures and small group teaching sessions. Since 2006, Matt has been a Special Lecturer in Equine Surgery at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, University of Nottingham.

 

Meredith Smith MA VetMB PhD CertES DipECVS MRCVS

Merry graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine, Cambridge University in 1999. She was awarded a Thouron scholarship upon graduation, which enabled her to complete a one year equine surgical internship at the New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, USA. In 2000 she began a 3½ year equine surgery residency programme at Leahurst, University of Liverpool, funded by the Horse Trust (formerly the Home of Rest for Horses) gaining the RCVS certificate in soft tissue surgery in 2002. In 2004 Merry joined the Endell Veterinary group as an equine surgeon for 18 months. During this time she gained the European (ECVS) Diploma in Equine Surgery in 2005.

In 2006 Merry undertook a three year PhD study on MRI of the equine distal limb, again funded by the Horse Trust, based at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket. On completion of her PhD in March 2009, Merry joined the referral hospital team at NEH, where she is responsible for running the MRI and scintigraphy services as well as participating in the emergency surgery rota. Merry specialises in advanced diagnostic imaging and surgery, with particular interests in MRI and emergency surgery such as colic and traumatology.

Merry has published 10 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals to date, on subjects including MRI in the horse, subchondral bone cysts and colic, receiving the Home of Rest for Horses Clinical Evidence Award in 2005. She has written a book chapter on MRI in the horse. Merry has regularly presented at national and international surgery and imaging meetings across Europe and has written review articles in the veterinary and equine press.

 

Interns

Will Barker BVSc MRCVS

Will qualified in June 2008 from the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool. He joined Greenwood Ellis and Partners in July 2008 as an intern with the Referrals team.

 

Ben Jacklin BA VetMB MRCVS

Ben qualified in June 2008 from the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge. He joined Greenwood Ellis and Partners in July 2008 as an intern with the Referrals team.

 

Helen Jones BVSc MRCVS

Helen qualified from the School of Veterinary Science, University of Bristol in 2008. She joined the intern programme at Newmarket Equine Hospital in October 2008.

 

Keeley McHugh BVSc MRCVS

Keeley qualified in June 2009 from the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool and joined Newmarket Equine Hospital in July 2009 as an intern with the Referrals team.

 

Rachel Jago BVM&S MRCVS

Rachel graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh in 2006. She worked for three years in large animal (predominantly equine) practice in Greater Manchester before joining the referrals team at Newmarket Equine Hospital as an intern in April 2010.
