Surgery

Horse in theatre.jpg

Our surgical team brings together RCVS and European-recognised Veterinary Specialists with extensive experience across all areas of equine surgery. From planned elective procedures to complex emergency interventions, we combine advanced surgical techniques with specialist expertise and comprehensive aftercare to achieve the best possible outcomes for every horse.

Our hospital is purpose-built to support complex surgical cases safely and efficiently, with three fully equipped operating theatres, including a dedicated in-theatre CT set-up, as well as four induction and recovery boxes and 24-hour cover.

From the moment your horse arrives, they are under the care of our dedicated multidisciplinary team lead by your specialist which includes professional yard staff, qualified imaging technicians, Registered Veterinary Nurses and a Diplomate-led anaesthesia team.

We take great pride in the standard of surgical treatment and aftercare we provide.

Our commitment to continuous improvement is reflected in our exceptionally low complication rates, which we monitor and publish through our annual clinical audit, available here.

As an independent veterinary hospital we are able to invest in the facilities and the people we feel align with our aims to provide exceptional veterinary care and attention to every horse that arrives at our gate.

  • Orthopaedics is the largest surgical discipline at NEH. Our specialist orthopaedic surgeons focus primarily on conditions affecting joints and bones, with arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and fracture repair among the most commonly performed procedures. We use advanced imaging and intraoperative CT to plan each case precisely, and work closely with our rehabilitation and farriery teams to support the horse's return to full performance wherever possible.

  • Our surgeons have extensive experience in managing both emergency and elective soft tissue cases. The major disciplines include abdominal surgery, airway surgery, and urogenital procedures. Whether your horse is referred to us for an elective procedure or arrives as an emergency - we have the facilities, expertise and experience to provide rapid specialist care with associated follow up from our dedicated team.

  • Colic is one of the most common surgical emergencies in the horse, and successful outcomes depend on rapid assessment and decisive intervention. Our dedicated colic team of surgical and medical specialists operates around the clock, providing a seamless pathway from initial triage through to surgery and intensive post-operative care. Speed matters in colic cases, and our purpose-built facility is designed to minimise delays at every stage.

  • Breathing difficulties are a surprisingly common cause of poor performance in the horse. We offer a full range of surgical options for conditions affecting the upper airways including surgeries for the improving and correcting both laryngeal and soft palate issues. Surgical planning is informed by thorough diagnostic assessment, including overground exercise endoscopy, to ensure the most appropriate intervention for each case. Overground endoscopy can be performed on yard or at our hospital facilities.

  • Equine dental disease can present in many ways, from difficulty eating and nasal discharge to subtle bitting problems and unexplained changes in performance. Our dental team provides thorough oral examinations and treatments using modern equipment, addressing both routine and complex dental conditions. Our surgeons are able to offer minimally invasive transbuccal extractions and endodontic treatment alongside more traditional dental work. Where dental disease is contributing to wider health or performance issues, we work closely with the relevant clinical teams to deliver a coordinated approach.

  • Athletic injuries can result in prolonged time out of training, with physical consequences for the whole horse. Our post surgical rehabilitation service supports recovery through tailored programmes designed to restore strength, flexibility, and performance safely and progressively. Working alongside our surgeons, physicians, and farrier, we take a collaborative approach to getting horses back to work — at whatever level that may be. Offering class IV laser therapy, shockwave therapy, injectable biologicals such as PRP, BMAC, ProStride, Alpha2Eq and working alongside many rehab centres in the area to get your horse back on track as safely and quickly as possible.
